AI SEO tools for small businesses: which one to choose

If you run a small business, the best SEO tool to start with is free: Google Search Console. Add Ahrefs Free to check your site for errors. Only pay when you need something they don't do, like studying competitors or seeing what ChatGPT says about you. Most people do it the other way round and pay $140 a month from day one.

Which AI SEO tools can a small business use?

Five options cover almost every case, from $0 to $140 a month according to their official websites. They all use AI somewhere, but they don't do the same job:

  • Google Search Console (free): shows which searches people use to find you and how often you appear in Google's AI summaries.
  • Ahrefs Free (free): checks your sites for errors and shows who links to you. Its Starter plan costs $29 a month.
  • Yoast SEO Premium ($118.80 a year, excluding tax): WordPress only. Its AI suggests titles and descriptions for Google.
  • SE Ranking ($129 a month for the Core plan): tracks your keywords, i.e. the searches you want to show up for. Its AI Search add-on also watches ChatGPT and Gemini.
  • Semrush ($139 a month for the SEO plan): the most complete option for studying competitors. Its Semrush One bundle, with AI visibility, starts at $199 a month.

What it means: the price doesn't tell you which one suits you, only how much it does. What to do: start with the two free ones and note what's missing. Why: a small business usually needs a few numbers, checked every week.

Rule of thumb: don't pay for what Google gives you for free.

Free tools already show how Google's AI sees you

According to Google, since 31 August 2026 every site has a generative AI performance report in Search Console. It shows your impressions, i.e. how often your link appears in AI Overviews and AI Mode (Google's AI search mode). You can split them by page, country and device. Clicks from there are added to the regular performance report.

Google is also testing an AI assistant inside that report. You type what you want to see, such as ‘mobile clicks from Spain last month’, and it sets up the filters. For now, according to Google, only a small group of users has it, with a limit of 20 requests a day.

What it means: before paying, you can already see whether Google's AI shows you. What to do: open the generative AI report and note your 5 pages with the most impressions. Why: it's Google's own data, not another company's estimate.

If you run an online store, also see how to measure visits from ChatGPT in our Black Friday AI guide.

Rule of thumb: look at what Google tells you for free first.

When is it worth paying for an SEO tool?

Search Console only shows your own site, and only on Google. Paid tools add two things: data on your competitors and what other AI assistants say about you. SE Ranking's AI Search add-on, for example, tracks five AI engines, including ChatGPT and Gemini. According to its website, it starts at $89 a month.

That tracking matters. In the Squarespace survey, 40% of the owners who checked what AI said about their business found wrong information: 4 in 10. And more than two-thirds had never checked at all.

What it means: paying makes sense when you need to look beyond your own site. What to do: write down the exact question you want answered before comparing plans. Why: these tools charge every month, and if you don't open them every week you're paying for nothing.

Rule of thumb: if you don't know which question it will answer, don't buy it.

What is the AI in these tools really for?

Mostly, it saves you repetitive work. Yoast SEO Premium suggests titles and descriptions, and proposes text changes based on its checks. The Search Console assistant builds a report from a single sentence of yours.

What it means: AI writes the draft, not the strategy. What to do: use it for titles, descriptions and reports, and always check the result before saving it. Why: Google warns that its assistant may create filters that don't match what you asked for.

If you want to sort out the rest of your toolkit, see our AI tools to save time in marketing.

Rule of thumb: let AI write the draft; the decision is yours.

The 3-step ladder: free, $29 and $100+ a month. You only climb when you're missing a piece of data.
The 3-step ladder: free, $29 and $100+ a month. You only climb when you're missing a piece of data.

The Garcai method: the 3-step ladder in one afternoon

You need one afternoon and access to your website. You only climb a step if the one below falls short.

  1. Step 1, free: add your site to Google Search Console and Ahrefs Free. First you need to verify it, i.e. prove that it's yours.
  2. Note 3 numbers from Search Console: your 10 searches with the most clicks, pages with many impressions but few clicks, and your AI impressions.
  3. Run the Ahrefs Free audit and fix the 3 errors that affect the most pages first.
  4. Write down the question you can't answer with the free tools. For example: ‘Which searches do my competitors show up for and I don't?’ or ‘What does ChatGPT say about my business?’
  5. Steps 2 and 3: if you have that question, try one paid month of Ahrefs Starter, SE Ranking or Semrush. If you don't open it every week, cancel it.

You can do it yourself: steps 2 to 5, without changing anything on your website.

Ask your tech team, or whoever runs your website, if you can't verify it yourself. Ready-to-send message: ‘Could you verify our site in Google Search Console using the domain option and give my email address owner access?’

Common mistakes

  • Paying for a big tool before opening Search Console, which is free.
  • Signing up for the annual plan on day one, before you know whether you'll use it every week.
  • Treating the traffic a paid tool estimates as exact: Google's own numbers are in Search Console.
  • Accepting AI suggestions without reading them, whether titles, descriptions or filters.
  • Looking only at Google and forgetting ChatGPT: that's what our guide to showing up in ChatGPT is for.
  • Paying for two tools that do the same job.

Free tools first, then whatever is missing. Once you know which searches you show up for, decide what to publish with our AI content strategy. And remember: don't pay for what Google gives you for free.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free SEO tool?

Google Search Console, because its data comes from Google itself. Ahrefs Free adds a check of your site's errors.

How much does an AI SEO tool cost?

From $0 to about $200 a month, according to the official websites in October 2026. The most common entry plans cost between $29 and $140 a month.

Does Search Console tell me if I show up in ChatGPT?

No, it only covers Google, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. For ChatGPT or Gemini you need a paid tool or to ask them yourself.

Do I need Yoast if my site isn't on WordPress?

No, because Yoast SEO is a WordPress plugin. Wix, Shopify and Squarespace come with their own SEO settings.
