SEO & GEO
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
By Rubén García · 3 min
Optimizing content so AI search engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews) cite it as a source.

The term comes from a Princeton and IIT Delhi study (KDD 2024) showing that adding statistics, citing sources and including expert quotes boosts visibility in generative answers by up to 40%.
It complements SEO: SEO gets you into the results; GEO gets you into the answer.
Generative engines don't return a list of links but a written answer that cites a few sources. GEO aims to make your content one of those sources: something the model finds, understands and considers trustworthy.
The original study tested nine techniques across 10,000 queries. The most effective were adding statistics, citing recognizable sources and including expert quotes. Keyword stuffing, by contrast, barely helped or even hurt visibility.
In practice it means structuring information well (direct answers, clear headings, dated data), keeping content up to date and allowing AI search crawlers to access it.
